Eddie Murphy has confirmed he is planning to make Beverly Hills Cop 4 once work on Coming To America 2 is complete.
Over the past decade or so, there have neen quite a few stop-starts where Beverly Hills Cop 4 is concerned. The movie has been on star Eddie Murphy’s docket, and scripts have been written with a view of taking the project forward. Heck, for some time, Brett Ratner was attached to direct, although he’s clearly long off the project.
Yeah that’s what we’re doing after Coming to America 2. We’re doing Beverly Hills Cop and then the plan is to get back on stage and do standup. That’s what I’ll be doing mostly is standup. These movies and Saturday Night Live it’s kind of like…I’m looking at it as a bookend. If I decided I wanted to stay on the couch forever, I ended it on a funny note.Eddie Murphy in interview to Collider
Which all suggests that the film is likely to go before the cameras next year, and that in turn means the earliest we’ll get to see it is 2021.
It’s certainly the right time for Murphy to be cashing in, as he’s having a renaissance at the moment, thanks to the Craig Brewer directed film Dolemite Is My Name. A biopic on the famed blaxploitation film star Rudy Ray Moore, Murphy’s performance as Moore is part of how the film has been building a strong buzz in advance of its limited theatrical release this weekend.
The franchise began in 1984, with the third film released in 1994. Murphy plays Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who, in the original film, travelled to California to hunt down his friend’s murderer.
